Oral history interview with Lucille Feist Hurst, Oct. 24, 1989.

Hurst remembers her parents, Theophil and Jessie Feist. Theophil Feist was born in Alsace-Lorraine (France), immigrated to New York, then came to Tacoma and opened a ladies department store with his sister and brother-in-law. He was active in Temple Beth Israel and a member of the Elks, Masons, and Rotary clubs. Jessie Feist started the Council of Jewish Women in Tacoma in 1916, served as president of Associated University Women, and also was active in Beth Israel. Lucille Feist also discusses her education at the Annie Wright Seminary and the University of Washington, where she was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. She was active in the Council of Jewish Women, serving as president several times. Feist was instrumental in the 1960 merger of Beth Israel and Sinai Temple into Temple Beth El, was the first president of the Beth El sisterhood, and served as temple president from 1980 to 1982.
